The hypnotherapist cat
The regulation of hypnotherapists in the UK is so lax that even a cat can become accredited, the BBC has found.Chris Jackson, presenter of Inside Out in the North East and Cumbria, registered pet George with three industry bodies.
Each one accepted a certificate from the non-existent Society of Certified Advanced Mind Therapists as proof of George’s credentials.
It follows a similar investigation by an American clinical psychologist.
Dr Steve Eichel suspected industry bodies in the US were not running checks on their members.
He said: “I felt I’d test my hypothesis and I did that by getting my cat certified by a number of the most prominent lay hypnosis organisations in the United States. It was a frighteningly simple process.”
In the UK, George was registered with the British Board of Neuro Linguistic Programming (BBNLP), the United Fellowship of Hypnotherapists (UFH) and the Professional Hypnotherapy Practitioner Association (PHPA).
The UFH welcomed the Inside Out investigation and admitted the mistake, which it said has since been corrected.
A PHPA spokesman said the organisation makes great effort to ensure every applicant is a fully-qualified hypnotherapist.
The BBNLP said it exists only to provide benefits to its members, not to check or certify credentials.
Bangladesh closes factories for World Cup
DHAKA (Reuters) – Authorities in soccer crazy Bangladesh on Monday asked all manufacturing factories in and around the capital Dhaka to suspend operations each evening until the end of the World Cup in South Africa.
“We have issued the order to the factories to switch off for five hours every evening in a desperate move to save electricity so people can watch the play on televisions,” said Saleh Ahmed, managing director of the Dhaka Electric Supply Company.
“This is an undesirable decision from an economic point of view but we were rather compelled,” he told reporters.
The month-long World Cup finishes on July 11.
Although Bangladesh, ranked 157th in the world, lost 6-1 to Tajikistan in a two-legged first round Asian zone qualifier for this year’s finals, the country’s young and old, in urban and rural areas, just go crazy whenever the finals are held.
At least 30 people were injured when disgruntled soccer fans attacked several power distribution centers and vandalized at least 20 vehicles in the capital on Saturday.
Hundreds of police brought the situation under control after fans in Dhaka were unable to watch the Argentina-Nigeria match.
Two state-run agencies supplying power in the capital of 12 million people have since decided to cut the routine evening one-hour power outage to 30 minutes during the World Cup.
The power supply officials said about 5,000 industries and factories would be affected by the decision.
Only 30 percent of Bangladesh’s 150 million population have access to electricity but officials admit demand is growing relative to supply, fuelling the anger of consumers.

International Cricket Council (ICC) plan World XI tour of Pakistan by end of 2011
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is eager to send an invitational World XI to play fixtures in Pakistan by the finish of 2011.
Cricket tours of Pakistan were halted after gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009.”World cricket must go back and play in Pakistan,” Giles Clarke, the head of the ICC’s Pakistan Task Team, told the Wisden Cricketer magazine.”The security challenges are huge but we cannot allow the terrorists to win.”
